News

In this column I'll include any breaking news, such as information on upcoming plot developments, new additions to the cast, or talk show appearances.

12/17/03 I've Seen ROTK...
and it was absolutely fantastic! I lved it! I was a bit disapointed that the halls of the healing parts were not there, but I got over it. It was just too good to have anything against it! I mean...how could it have ended any better?? I laughed, I cried, and loved this movie!

11/10/03 Ain't-It-Cool-News talked directly with director Peter Jackson about the Hard Truths of Editing RETURN OF THE KING...
...Peter... knowing very well that this was volatile news... Not in any other sense than there will be a certain level of fan disappointment at the loss of Christopher Lee's scenes in RETURN OF THE KING, but he didn't want to see the record wrong on how all of this came to be. Here's what Peter wrote me....
We have decided to save the Saruman sequence for the DVD. It's a great little scene; 7 mins long. Chris is wonderful, as usual. Brad is in about 6 shots. It was a film maker decision - nothing to do with the studio.

The problem is that the sequence was originally shot for The Two Towers, as it is in the book. Since The Two Towers couldn't sustain a 7 min "wrap" after Helm's Deep, we thought it would be a good idea to save it for the beginning of the Return of the King. The trouble is, when we viewed various ROTK cuts over the last few weeks, it feels like the first scenes are wrapping last year's movie, instead of starting the new one. We felt it got ROTK off to an uncertain beginning, since Saruman plays no role in the events of ROTK (we don't have the Scouring later, as the book does), yet we dwell in Isengard for quite a long time before our new story kicks off.

We reluctantly made the decision to save this sequence for the DVD. The choice was made on the basis that most people will assume that Saruman was vanquished by the Helm's Deep events, and Ent attack. We can now crack straight into setting up the narrative tension of ROTK, which features Sauron as the villian.

It was a very similar situation to last year when we decided to take a nice Boromir/Denethor flashback out of The Two Towers, and put it in the DVD. It was causing us pacing problems in the theatrical version, but with the Extended Cut just coming out now, fans can see this great little scene. Thank God for DVD, since it does mean that a version of the movie, which has different pacing requirements, can be released later. The Saruman sequence will definately be a highlight of the Extended ROTK DVD.

We have a lot of great DVD material this time around. As we crafted the movie, we reduced it from an over 4 hour running time, down to 3.12 (without credits - about 8 mins long). This was done by us. There were no studio cutting notes. We now have a movie with a pace that fells ok for it's theatrical release. One more week to go. We are nearly there. Will we still be standing? It's going to be a close run thing.

8/08/03 The Two Towers Extended Cut To Be 222 Minutes Long

In an interview in the official Lord of the Rings Fan Club Magazine, director Peter Jackson has revealed that the forthcoming extended DVD of The Two Towers will be about 43 minutes longer than the theatrical cut. This will make the film a whopping three hours and forty-five minutes long, about 20% longer than the theatrical cut and 15 minutes longer than the extended version of Fellowship. Jackson also reveals that the Treebeard section of the story will receive much more screen time in the extended version, and that it has actually been finished for several months now. Fans will have to wait until the November DVD release to see the new cut.

01/15/03 TTT Box Office Info

The second installment of Jackson's trilogy continues to surpass its predecessor at the box office, grossing an estimated $26 million in its third weekend of release for a U.S. total of $262 million. For comparison, Fellowship had only reached $156 million after its third weekend of release, demonstrating the enormous fan base gained by converts from the first movie. Towers tied for second place as the fastest film to reach $200 million in only 12 days, and is twice as long as the #1 recordholder in that category. The film has also broken its predecessor's December records for opening day ($26 million) and opening weekend ($62 million). The film has also been performing well internationally, breaking opening day records in at least 8 countries. Most box office analysists are now predicting the film to reach a final U.S. gross in the range of $350-$400 million.

    Gossip

Here I'll include some of the juicier stuff I hear. No guarantee of the accuracy of anything you read in this column!

    05/08/03 From bikkit.com
ROTK is indeed, far and way better than both Fellowship and Two Towers. It was a 4 hour, 20 minute cut of the film. Feeling that he has proven audiences will gladly sit for 3 hours of quality cinema, Peter Jackson will try to leave the film's 1/6 of a day total time as is.

Ringer Spy Iluvatar writes: i got my dirty claws on a rumour from a friend who works for Edwards theatres. This weekend on firday night, tv networks will begin to re air the trailers for TTT but now at the end will be what we have all been waiting for...THE RETURN OF THE KING TRAILER HAS ARRIVED!!! I figured this would interest everyone whom has been starving for news on this subject just as I have. My source tells me that the preview will be shown at the end of the movie starting in the second weekend of March 2003.

    01/17/03

From what I'm hearing there are 3 initial edits for Peter to begin looking at. A 3 hour cut, a 3 and a half hour cut and a 4 and a half hour cut. The version that was screened to Elijah, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan was the 3 hour cut. Word has it that tears flowed beginning 40 minutes in and that this is THE film of the trilogy. For those that know the material that is left to cover, I bet you can imagine what the scene is...

6/5/02   The latest rumors go like this, from TORC, from user Nilson the White's source

There is, as always, a chance that this isn't true information. Some info about Aragorn and the Palantir is possibly either outdated or incorrect, so there is always a chance of this not being reliable.

    4. What elves (ie. Lorien, Elrond's sons) are present at the battle of Helm's Deep? How do they get there?

Elrond, Arwen, and many of the Elves from Rivendell decide to leave their home because they feel it is no longer safe.

    ELROND:
"Saruman's orcs grow near, and I fear
that the shadow has set upon our power.
We shall go east, to Lothlorien, and await
    our doom."

Before they leave, Arwen, dressed for the road, takes the shards of Narsil.

And so they go. Arwen begins to have troubling visions as they travel. Once they reach Lorien she talks to Galadriel about it, and she offers to let Arwen use her mirror. Arwen views her whole relationship with Aragorn, starting with when he first sees her, some happy times, and their farwell at Rivendell.

She then sees him at the battle of Helms Deep. The rain is pouring down, and he is alone surrounded by dozens of Uruk-hai. He is then killed. Seeing this, she pleads with her father and Galadriel to send help. They agree and a group -- led by Haldir, the elf dude Aragorn spoke to in the first movie -- leads them. Arwen wishes to go, but Elrond convinces her to stay behind for now.

We hear no more about the Elves until Theoden, Aragorn, and Company arrive at Helms Deep. It seems deserted from a distance, and it is thought that the orcs succeeded in killing the people (refugees) inside. As they get closer the Elves, armed with arrows, pop up from behind the bulwarks. Seeing that they are from Rohan puts them at ease.

Haldir comes to Aragorn and Theoden and explain that they were able to
defend the people and the small Rohirim contingent in the base from a few raids, but that their scouts report that Saruman has amassed a huge army of Uruk-hai and Wildmen which are marching towards Helms Deep.

During the huge battle which follows, Haldir is slain and Aragorn -- after much debate and thought -- takes control of the Elves and the Rohirrim.
    5. Why is Elrond so easily moved from Rivendell?

When Elrond does in fact reach Lorien, he has a short conversation with Celeborn / Galadriel and about Aragorn and combating Sauron's forces.

    Elrond:
The banners of Gil-Galad fly no
more, and we have lost much, but I am
    unwilling to abandon Middle-earth,
where we have long suffered and long
    dwelt.

It seems Elrond is ready to fight for Middle Earth.
    6. What do the Elves do with Bilbo?

They take him to Lorien with them. He actually has a few scenes with Elrond and Arwen.

'Xoanon' from TheOneRing.net tells us that New Line Cinema executives have gotten a peek at the upcoming sequel...
With a certain level of secrecy, the top brass at New Line Cinema just got back from a visit to New Zealand. As the rumor has it, they were there for an update on the status of The Two Towers and to see a 'rough-cut' of the film. The information we have tells us they absolutely loved what they saw. Most seemed to agree that it was even better then Fellowship of the Ring. Hey, sounds good to me! We'll investigate further and see if we can get any kind of official statement on the trip.

04-24-02: Petition to Remove Saruman's Cheesy Death (TolkienMovies.com)
Now why wasn't this done sooner? Drop by and leave your name on this petition to change Saruman's death scene back to the way Tolkien wrote it.

04-13-02 A spy photo taken during filming seems to show Saruman's death on a piece of machinery at the Orthanc set, and some readers have suggested he will fall from the tower after his confrontation with the heros in The Two Towers, instead of perishing in the Shire later on as in the books.

4/13/02 -Frodo and Sam's confrontation with the giant spider Shelob, which occurs at the end of Tolkien's Two Towers, has been moved to the beginning of the third film. It's not yet clear how this will affect the events immediately preceding and following it.

The Scouring of the Shire sequence will not be included in the films, although the Departure for the Gray Havens is in.
